Asian Youth Orchestra: Guide to Vibrato

The Asian Youth Orchestra, Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra, is dedicated educating Asia’s brightest young musicians by offering exceptional opportunities for study and performance in an international environment. Instructing a student on learning Vibrato can be an exhausting process, but it is incredibly rewarding to watch one accomplish this feat… and takes much talent, determination and dedication to do so. Vibrato is a type of musical sound produced by musicians to create an expressive and full musical tone. Each musician’s vibrato is like their fingerprint; unique, personal and identifying.
Here are some quick guidelines to consider when one is learning and practicing vibrato:
Select the right music
Playing vibrato requires your full concentration, particularly at the initial stage. If you are a beginner to learning vibrato, you should start with a minor scale that you are already familiar with playing. By doing this, all your focus can be on learning vibrato.
Utilize your wrist and not your fingers
Focus on your wrist movements. Go slow. Focus. This will help produce an even and fast vibrato. Despite the fact that it seems vibrato arises from the movement of your fingers, this is actually incorrect. Your fingers are empowered by your wrist through the movement of the wrist- they work together in harmony, mobilising each other through each motion. When properly done, your relaxed wrist will translate the correct vibrato movement from your arm into your hand and fingers. “a perfect vibrato is a combination of finger, wrist and forearm”
Practice Daily
Everyone, from beginners to advanced musicians, need to practice vibrato daily. String players must be extremely accurate because any slight movement on the strings will cause the pitch to sound sharp or flat. Without consistent practice, it is all too easy to lose the warm, full tones you’ve worked so hard to develop.
Every year The Asian Youth Orchestra offers approximately 100 students an opportunity for advanced study, performance and an international concert touring experience with celebrated artists and conductors. The 2018 performances include:
