2019 Asian Youth Orchestra Rehearsal Camp -- Week 2

Dear AYO Friends,

What a week! Not sure if the lead story should be music (the Orchestra sounding incredibly fantastic), a signal 8 tropical depression closing the city (we were able to continue rehearsals for all but two hours of our 9-hour days), or city-wide public action.

We are safe and continue our daily rehearsal routines, the orchestra’s growth especially phenomenal. We are so proud of kids and appreciative of our artist-faculty and the techniques they share that raise the standard of playing to new heights!

Friday was great fun as our woodwind, brass and percussion sections staged a flash mob and pops performances in the lobby of Cathay Pacific’s Cathay City. Our thanks to the Cathay team that invited us and helped set it all up. The reaction from Cathay’s Simon Large: “It lifted our spirits.”

The International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in NYC

We had some amazing achievements from our Hong Kong Out Swimmers who participated in the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in New York City! (#IGLA2019)

HK Out Swimmers
David Warren won a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle
Sebastian Turner won a silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley
Shawn Hiltz won a silver medal in the 50 meter breaststroke, a silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke and a gold medal in the 100 meter breaststroke.

The New York Aquatics team hosted the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in New York City from Sunday June 23 to Sunday June 30th 2019. In conjunction with this event, New York City also hosted Stonewall’s 50th anniversary, and hosted WorldPride 2019. The last time the LGBT+ swimming community gathered in NYC was nearly 25 years ago, when they hosted Gay Games IV in 1994, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

The Difference between Bespoke Suits and Tailor Made

La Elite Fashions specialises in creating ladies and gentlemen's bespoke suits and specialty garments. Just like with everything else in life, the selection of your clothes is very important aspect of your personality. What you choose to wear is telling everyone else what you want to achieve, how serious your job is for you, it can even tell others your current mood. Therefore, if you are interested in changing the way you choose your clothes, it is time to learn more about the bespoke and tailor made garments. Once you clarify those terms in your head, you will be able to handle your wardrobe on a higher level.

History: Bespoke vs Tailor Made
As the terms were born, their initial meaning was one and the same. Tailor made garments, according to the specific taste and measurements of the customer. Size, patterns, and colours were all decided by the particular customer at the moment of creation. Let’s take a look at the specific meaning that those terms have now so that we can separate their meaning in our minds.

Bespoke
Bespoke is the initial method of tailoring in which the customer has absolute control over the given garment. He can control the colours, the fabric and the overall style of the garment. This method requires multiple fittings so that the garment can fit perfectly the customer. Because it takes so much time, bespoke garments are much more expensive than any other ready to wear, made to measure or even custom made garments.
While you may choose everything, a good tailor like Danny will also use their experience and sense of style to help guide you in pushing those boundaries without going too far. For example, first-timers often make very showy suits, and then barely wear them (despite it being their highest quality and best-fitting).

Finished Suits and Happy Customer!

Tailor Made
There are usually less choices than a bespoke clothing item, but the process is also alot quicker and less time-consuming. La Elite Fashions can have your suit, or other clothing items ready within 24 hours! This has made many customers very happy. Otherwise the process is very similar to a bespoke item, with personalised measurements. It sounds like the best of both worlds.

Even the procedure is fulfilling. You get to meet your tailor and express all of your thoughts on what you’re looking for. You will love the amazing variety and perfect fit that La Elite Fashions will provide you. So head on over and visit their shop in Tsim Sha Tsui today!

2019 Asian Youth Orchestra Tour -- Tianjn, Beijing & Hong Kong

Two Hours 30 minutes by bus from Beijing to Tianjin and the Asian Youth Orchestra is in terrific shape under guest conductor Joseph Bastian with soloist Rachel Cheung, impressing the CEO of the Juilliard - Tianjin project, Alex Brose, just days away from launch. Pre-concert dinner hosted by Tianjin Conservatory President Xu, renewing a student/teacher friendship that began some 50 years ago when Mr. Pontzious was a visiting scholar at the Shanghai Conservatory. The sold-out crowd for AYO was icing on the cake!

Back to Beijing and a short night of rest had of our concert in the National Centre for the Performing Arts, our 10th visit in so many years. This coveted invitation to perform in the NCPA reflects the respect accorded to AYO. In turn, and with another sold-out crowd, the Orchestra turned up the heat for a brilliant Scheherazade. Many, many thanks to the HKSAR Beijing Office for their support in Beijing and Tianjin.

A smooth check-in and even smoother flight the next morning and we are back in Hong Kong for our third concert in as many nights. Yes, we’re exhausted. Nevertheless, the Orchestra responds professionally. We all have reason to be proud. Post concert City Hall, the word heard over and over — “Fantastic.”

As AYO Board Chairman Jim Thompson wrote to Richard: "So many people - on both nights - told me how thrilled they were to experience the magic you've made with the Asian Youth Orchestra.” Board member Ada Tse wrote, “The AYO concert really lifted our spirits.” Bravo to all!

2019 Asian Youth Orchestra AYO Tour -- Hong Kong Part 2

How does one prepare for a concert in Hong Kong’s City Hall when 60,000 protestors are gathering in Chater Garden, just across the street from this popular concert venue? Our friends at Leisure and Culture Services who have prepared the Hall for us advised that the situation outside appears calm but we must be alert. 90 minutes before concert time and the Orchestra is running through its pre-concert rehearsal paces. An hour to go and what will be a near capacity crowd is beginning to assemble in the Hall, nothing more than simple city chat and a few words about the gathering outside. We have been told that in case tear gas is fired near the venue, the air conditioning would be turned off to minimise any contamination to people in the hall.

Eight-o’clock and the concert is a go. A brilliant concert under the baton of guest conductor Joseph Bastian with piano soloist Rachel Cheung, it would be, all broadcast live on RTHK Radio 4. Two hours later and Richard takes the stage to close the concert with the introduction of the AYO musicians by the counties and territories from which they have been chosen. It is an AYO tradition, borne years ago, in this situation seemingly more appropriate than ever, musicians from 12 Asian countries and territories coming together night after night performing in harmony the great musical works of the ages.

Wrote one of Jim Thompson’s guests after the concert, "Watching such an inspiring group of young people engaged and immersed in their passion was really heart warming - with this polarised world we are living in nowadays, it's easy to lose sight of the power of bringing people, and most importantly, the younger generation together for a collective meaning and purpose. The music was flawless."

Concerts now complete and typhoons tamed in Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjin, Beijing and now Hong Kong. Next stop - Taiwan.

We closed the week with a dinner for the full orchestra, stage team and artist faculty (130 in total) seafood dinner hosted by AYO friend David Tran in the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel. A big thanks, David.

Sunday, we put a shine on our Hong Kong Music Summer kids with in a side-by-side concert project conducted in brilliant fashion by our guest conductor Joseph Bastian. More than 60 Music Summer kids participated, the youngest 9 years old with a tiny violin. This was the 10thyear for this project, which involves AYO alumnae as teachers, who then pass the Music Summer kids to the AYO artist faculty for master classes. It’s a win-win all round.

Post-concert the Orchestra, faculty, AYO Board Chairman Jim Thompson and his wife Sally and staff gathered for yet another dinner, this hosted for the 29thyear by Sino Land as a faculty appreciation dinner. A fantastic evening in the Royal Pacific Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. It took some rerouting to get us home, but once again with smart planning by our staff and we were home safely.

Now the final push. Four days of rehearsal to go here in Hong Kong and then we’re off to Shanghai for the first of four concerts on the mainland.
