Facebook celebrated its 14th birthday earlier this year, and this popular social media platform is starting to show its age. People over 55 are now the fastest-growing demographic using -and joining- Facebook, as teens and young adults ditch Mark Zuckerberg’s social network in favor of Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter.  According to a UK report, only 2.2 million 12- to 17-year-olds and 4.5 million 18- to 24-year-olds will regularly use Facebook in 2048-- this is a decrease of 700,000 from 2017. The largest growth this year is found in the older population, with 500,000 new over-55s expected to join Facebook. This will result in over 6.4 million 55 to 65-year-olds, or older, regular Facebook users this year! Literally the biggest demographic except for 16- to 34-year-olds.

In 2012 Facebook bought Instagram for $1billion, which has helped them be successful in keeping ahold of some of the younger users that have shifted to other social media sites.

Out in Hong Kong Tennis Open 2018



The 2018 Out in Hong Kong Tennis Open was hugely successful and a fun sporting event for the local LGBT+ community! Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022 is still some time away, and this friendly tennis competition was just the thing to get us revved up and in the sporting spirit. The second annual Out in Hong Kong Open tournament took place last month with three full days of tennis matches, including a singles competition and a special women’s only doubles division. A BIG heartfelt “Thank You” to all those that contributed in organizing, volunteering, and sponsoring this non-profit event that benefited so many-- more than 70 international and local players, all of our Hong Kong LGBT+ community and friends, and over 5,000 Out in Hong Kong members.


Players from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels gathered for this fun 3 day event, meeting new tennis players, friends, and helping to support the LGBT+ community. Good sportsmanship was shown across the board, with players focusing on fun and friendly competition!


A lucky draw raffle was held at the tournament-concluding Gala Dinner, which was a big highlight of the event! Also on the agenda was a Rooftop Terrace Welcome Reception, Après Tennis Happy Hour, Soho Bar Crawl, as well as the above mentioned Tournament Gala Dinner.

It’s official… the very special second edition of the Out in Hong Kong Open was a huge success!

Asian Youth Orchestra: Best Classical Music for Christmas


 
All of us at the Asian Youth Orchestra would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and of course a Wonderful New Year!
Christmas time is, arguably, the best time of the year. The nostalgic feeling as well as the feeling of good cheer in the air and bright decorations loudly announces that the Christmas season is upon us! During Christmas time every song we hear has a profound effect on us, enticing even the grinchiest grinch to smile. There is pop music, which makes want us to put on our dancing shoes, to Christmas carols that simply comforts our soul, classical music which gives us the feeling of hope, joy and more. But let us concentrate on classical music, which has been in existence for a long time.

Read on as we delve in a little into the river of the history of classical music.


Music has nearly always been a big part of every life and culture, with many different genres to choose from.  Just like different types of music are associated with different cultures and people, music is also linked with seasons and time. Christmas season, just like other seasons and times of the year, has its own special style of “typical” musical genre associated with it, frequently with religious roots.

There are some legendary classical musicians which we can never overlook when it comes to good classical Christmas music, like J.S Bach who is well known for his classical masterpiece “Christmas Oratorio”. Composed in 1734, Christmas Oratorio tells the entire Christmas story from the Birth right through the arrival and adoration of the Magi.

Victor Hely-Hutchinson is also well known for his Carol Symphony- which gained many fans in the Eighties when it was used as the title theme for a BBC adaptation of John Masefield's The Box of Delights. The first movement of the symphony might make you wonder, is this really a Christmas song? Keep listening, at the 31 second mark, it all becomes clear.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers, from The Nutcracker, is well worth mentioning. After all, what could be more appropriate for children at Christmas than a magical kingdom of sweets and presents?

Why are people over 55 favoring Facebook? Facebook’s video and photo experience makes it a platform for families, so that grandparents and other older adults can keep in touch easily with their grandkids, and other family members. Facebook is taking note of this trend, earlier this year Facebook announced a major overhaul of its news feed algorithm in which posts from friends and family are prioritised, while also reducing the amount of content from publishers and brands. Zuckerberg himself has pledged to “make sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent”.

Overall Facebook remains the top social media platform in the world, with 2.27 billion monthly active users as of the third quarter of 2018, and a reported $4.3bn profit for the final quarter of last year, a 61% year-on-year rise. Instagram’s user base is predicted to grow from 15.7 million to 18.4 million, while Snapchat surges from 14.8 million to 16.2 million and Twitter grows from 12.4 million to 12.6 million.
