NewLaw Firms: Advantages and Challenges

NewLaw firms, like Cognatio Law, offer many advantages to their clients such as practical and time sensitive business and risk management solutions at significant cost savings. In addition, the NewLaw model also offers significant benefits for lawyers, such as a flexible work schedule, which contributes to a better work-life balance, and more freedom to choose your working hours and clients. These advantages appeal to both men and women, helping to balance the playing field in a traditionally male-dominated profession. Under the NewLaw business model, gender discrimination issues have been minimised. Clients simply just want the best person for the job.

In particular, many female lawyers are turning to NewLaw practices due to decreased promotion opportunities and the lack of work/life balance within traditional private practice law firms. The ability to spend more time with family/children is one of the main reasons many female lawyers are citing for making the switch to NewLaw.

NewLaw does not, however, solve the underlying gender inequality issues that women face within the legal profession. It does, however, embrace fair hiring practices and equal opportunities for both men and women. When it comes to NewLaw assignments, female and male lawyers are presented with the same opportunities. The best candidate for the project is the one who is hired. Pay levels are typically based on PQE and/or the specialist experience of the candidates.

Switching to a NewLaw practice over a traditional law firm does, however, present some challenges. Lawyers will in general experience an overall drop in compensation of around 30% when making the switch from either a permanent private practice or in-house lawyer position. In addition, lawyers will need to be comfortable working in a consultant role and thereby not be provided with any management or decision making responsibilities. They will also still be expected to produce high-quality work. Adaptability and flexibility are also essential skills as a lawyer could be seconded to several companies during the calendar year and will need to quickly adapt to each client’s working cultures. The majority of NewLaw consultants agree though that the benefits of a flexible work schedule and better work/life balance outweigh the challenges listed above.

From the smallest startup to the largest corporation, most companies understand that marketing is important, but few recognise marketing should be a top priority. The majority of businesses focus on lead generation as their top marketing objective, while lead generation is important, there is much more to a marketing-first approach. A good marketing team not only empowers their sales team to do their jobs, but understands what their target consumers want, how the company can meet those needs, and how to communicate that message to the end users. In essence, a marketing-first approach to business ensures that the products and services the company offers are relevant to their target audience. The best marketing-first companies create brands that do more than focus on lead generation, they take initiative and drive competitiveness and success.

To implement a marketing-first approach, start by having your business leaders (managers) recognize that marketing is a top priority. Work as a team to launch marketing projects focused at influencing sales, creating positive consumer experiences, and build your brand name. Ensure other departments take marketing seriously by linking marketing efforts to clear objectives, like ROI, customer behavior, and, where applicable, revenue itself. When marketing carries hard targets other departments will pay more attention and become more willing to assist in marketing enablement.

Encouraging collaboration between sales and marketing can lead to increased revenue and boost in brand visibility-- which leads to customers having a higher sense of brand awareness. They remember you! Collaboration between these two departments is more than a trendy concept, it’s the future of successful sales cycles.

Asian Youth Orchestra:  A History

As we wrap up another international concert tour, with amazing performances in Hong Kong, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Xian, Beijing, Manila, Chiayi City, Taipei, Ayase & Tokyo, it is time to reflect on the meaningful history, the humble beginnings of the Asian Youth Orchestra.

The idea for creating the Asian Youth Orchestra first came to Richard Pontzious (AYO Founder, Artistic Director and Conductor) during his time spent in Taiwan, Japan and China beginning in 1967 through the 1980’s. During this time Richard Pontzious conducted and toured extensively, introducing Beethoven, Brahms, Prokofiev, and Copland to Chinese audiences. He frequently connected with students who all seemed to have the same question; “How might they study music abroad?”. Whilst innocent enough, the end result of this is that many of the students that leave Asia for studies abroad, never return home. Thus began the inspiration for the first draft of Richard Pontzious’s plan for founding the Asian Youth Orchestra.

He wanted to create a local orchestra, that would unite the region and celebrate the excellence of young Asian musician. An orchestra that would encourage the new generation of talented individuals to build on what they have at home, rather than looking to leave for whereabouts unknown. The proposal ready, Richard Pontzious then first shared his idea with Yehudi Menuhin, a renowned violinist and conductor. The idea lit a fire of inspiration within Yehudi Menuhin as well, and they met to discuss the possibilities, first in Reno, Nevada, San Francisco, and then at Yehudi Menuhin’s home in Chester Square, London. Filled with excitement and hope at the idea of bringing together young Asian musicians, Yehudi Menuhin signed on as music director without hesitation.

Yehudi Menuhin provided the musical inspiration that drew public and media attention to AYO’s humble beginnings. In addition his introduction to former British Prime Minister Edward Heath, who had been instrumental in founding the European Community Youth Orchestra, paved the road to the Asian Youth Orchestra’s eventual success.

Assisting behind the scenes were two San Francisco physicians, brothers Ben and A. Jess Shenson. Having traveled extensively in Asia since the 1930s, their introduction to the irrepressible Sing Tao chairman, Sally Aw Sian was invaluable. With their help and confidence, Sally generously supported us with a gift in excess of HK$5 million.

These four amazing individuals, Ben and A. Jess Shenson, Sally Aw and Yehudi Menuhin are the true godparents of the Asian Youth Orchestra. The 1990 inaugural performance took place in Kumamoto, Japan, with the orchestra playing a concert under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin.

After three decades of dedication, The Asian Youth Orchestra is now comprised of approximately 100 young musicians aged between 17-27, selected during spring auditions from twelve Asian countries and territories. The selected musicians then train hard for performances each summer in Asia, Australia, Europe and the USA. Some of our most notable performances include performances at the White House, The Hollywood Bowl, Berlin’s Schauspielhaus, The Sydney Opera House and many others. Please follow The Asian Youth Orchestra on Facebook and Instagram for 2019’s audition and tour dates and details.
