Creating Inclusive Workplaces for LGBT+ Employees

Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 would like to wish you a very Happy New Year! As we begin a fresh chapter in the new year, many are seeking to create resolutions to better themselves. Typically these resolutions are personal goals, such as losing weight, quitting a bad habit, and/or learning a new skill-- but why stop there? This year, why not work to create a more inclusive workplace environment for all?! Workplaces that have policies specifically protecting employees who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT+) against discrimination are not yet common in Asia, which makes working to support these minorities even more important. Whether you own your own company, are a business leader, or are one of the working billions just trying to keep a roof over your head-- these simple steps can help everyone feel welcome and included. Are you ready for company morale to go through the roof?! Read on…
Be an equal opportunity employer.
Ensure your hiring process and work policies are focused on being an equal opportunity employer. By focusing on what your employees and colleagues can bring to the table in terms of talent and skill, you will attract a more diverse talent pool. Having a well-rounded team can boost business performance, as well as employee engagement and morale. Being an equal opportunity employer ensures a diverse business that can represent the clients they serve in the most effective manner possible.

Create a safe workplace for all employees
Start by developing clear anti-discrimination policies, then enforce them consistently and fairly. When an employee comes to you with a complaint, promptly investigate the issue. Last but not least, learn ways to de-escalate tense situations and come to a peaceful resolution, especially around issues of diversity.

Support local LGBT+ resources, and PRIDE events
Gather employees who are interested in attending these events and go as a group! Not only are you supporting diversity, but you are also promoting your business and letting the local community know that you are a safe place to purchase and/or do business with. Win-Win
It’s the right thing to do
Lastly, creating an inclusive workplace environment for all is simply the right thing to do in general. Driving diversity matters for all of us- not only the LGBT+ community. Diversity and equality for all should be the norm, rather than the exception.

We’d also like to say Thank You to Community Business, for their dedication to advancing responsible and inclusive business practices in Asia.  These are the people behind the Hong Kong LGBT+ Inclusion Index & Awards, which has been an ongoing pioneering initiative since 2015. The 2019 Hong Kong LGBT+ Inclusion Index is currently open for submissions.
