Hong Kong’s 2017 Snooker Women's Champion: Difference Between Snooker, Pool and Billiards

Hong Kong snooker ace Ng On-yee won her second world title in April 2017 when she clinched the women’s Six Reds World Championship singles title in Leeds, England! Ng On-yee was also the first ever Asian lady to take part in the Men’s World Professional Snooker Championship.
“Playing at the very top level is a dream come true for me. I am sure, like for me, all the top female players are very excited to see that World Snooker is showing signs of moving away from past tradition and opening up the door for more opportunities for ladies to participate in different competitions.” - Ng On-yee
Hong Kong is currently bidding to host the Gay Games in 2022 and their proposal holds an extensive variety of games and events; more than any Gay Games has before!  There will be 36 sporting events at Gay Games Hong Kong 2022; including Snooker, Pool and Billiards which will be supported and governed by the HK Billiard Sports Control Council. Snooker, pool and billiards are actually 3 different games belonging to the same class – the cue sports.
Here are some differences between them:

Hong Kong’s “Snooker Queen”, On Yee Ng, winner of the 2017 Eden World Women's Championship.

  • Snooker: Snooker is typically played on a large table with six pockets that have rounded openings. There are 15 red balls worth one point, six colored balls worth 2 to 7 points, and one cue ball. The objective is to shoot the cue ball to alternately pocket a red ball and then a colored ball earning the points of the designated balls. The colored balls get re-spotted after they are pocketed so a player can continue their "break". The high score at the end wins the frame and winning a predetermined number of frames will win the match.
  • Pool: Pool is played on the smallest table of the 3 sports, and is typically considered the easiest to play.. The most common type is 8 ball pool which has 7 solid and 7 striped balls and one black one. Players must choose their type, then to win the game, the player must pot only their type(ie solids or stripes) and then the black. There are many other rules but this is the basics of how to play the game of pool.
  • Billiards: English billiards is the most common, played on pocketless tables slightly smaller than a Snooker table. It is played with 3 balls, yellow, white, and red. Yellow and white are cue balls for the two players. One for each. Points are scored by potting, in-offs (cue ball is potted) and cannons (Cue ball hits both other balls before coming to rest) It is usually played as a race to a set number of points, or as a timed game.
