Holiday season, is the best time of the year to make huge sales and Primasia Corporate Services is here to help you with many of the finer details of running your business, including China e-commerce solutions.
While
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are days that always get all the
attention of everyone in the United States, China’s Singles’ Day is a
day which has totally and single-handedly wipe them off the board. Last
year, more items were bought during this 24 hours of whooping sales of
goods than the combination of both Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales!
What is the story behind this phenomenal day? How did it come into
place? How can you participate in it? All these will be answered in this
article.
Singles'
Day, which is also known as “bare sticks holiday”, began in the year
1993 at Nanjing University. It began as a day for single students to
celebrate their singledom-- thereby acting as an opposite of Valentine’s
day. The date 11:11 was picked due to the fact that it resembles 4
solitary bare sticks and hence the name “bare sticks holiday”. Singles’
Day came into the limelight in 2009, when Alibaba began using it as an
event to promote retailer discounts on their e-commerce platforms. This
annual event always kickoff by twelve midnight of 11:11 (11th November)
and runs for complete 24 hours, during which very big discounts are
featured on a variety of goods. Many people do refer to this day as the
Chinese version of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, this day has
proven to be bigger than both Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined!
In
2017, according to Alibaba, over 15 million products from more than
140,000 brands, including 60,000 international brands, was offered
discounts on Tmall – which is more than the amount in 2016 . Besides
this e-commerce giant, other platforms like JD.com have
become fierce competitors, working hard enough to compete with huge
sales. This year’s Singles’ Day has gone international, as Amazon has
added Australia, the Netherlands and Singapore to its list of
participating countries. Alibaba has further integrated its Lazada
acquisition to add Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore and
the Philippines.
Every
brand in China is beating the drum for Singles' Day and every brand
prepares well in advance for this special day. Many brands have
participated in many forms of advertisement and have been making use of
different marketing strategies months before in order to ensure they
make sufficient sales on that one day. In fact, the number of sales
generated on Singles’ Day can make or break many small businesses.
