Tens of Thousands March in Taiwan Gay Pride Parade


 
Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 can learn much from the organizers of Taiwan Pride! Having begun in 2003, the annual Taiwan Gay Pride Parade is the biggest gay pride march in East Asia! Over 130,000 people gathered in the streets of Taipei to march ar the annual Taiwan Gay Pride Parade in support of same-sex marriage.  Tens of thousands marched in front of the Office of the President in Taipei, Taiwan on Saturday 27 October 2018. This year’s LGBT+ event had particular importance, as it was scheduled to take place a month before a historic vote on same-sex marriage. On November 24 a referenda will take place, where people will vote on equal marriage rights for same sex couples, as well as LGBT+ issues in school curricula.


Taiwan has been hosting the annual Taiwan Gay Pride Parade for 16 years! This year’s theme was “Tell Your Story, Vote for Equality”-- slogans included “Love is Equal” and “Vote for a Happy Future”. The Rainbow City Symphonic Band also performed during the march, inspiring all those around them.


A huge rainbow flag was carried through the parade route, proudly hoisted by LGBT+ supporters. As you can see from the photos, this was truly an inspiring event!


Taiwan civil gay rights activist Chi Chia-wei was also in attendance at the Taiwan Gay Pride Parade. Chi in known for being the first person in Taiwan to come out as gay publicly, taking place on national television in 1986. He made the announcement at a press conference, where he spoke about his sexuality, as well as the importance of AIDS and HIV awareness and prevention.
