Welcome Mr. Joseph Bastian - AYO Guest Conductor


We are thrilled to welcome French-Swiss conductor Joseph Bastian to the Asian Youth Orchestra. Well known as “one of the most exciting talents of the younger generation”, Mr. Bastian’s skill and experience will be a great asset to the AYO team in Hong Kong this summer, and our 2019 Asian Concert Tour which will be featuring the magical batons of both guest conductor Joseph Bastian, as well as AYO Founder  Richard Pontzious.

Background:

Joseph Bastian is the former bass trombonist for the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. In 2016 he exploded into international public eye when he was asked by his Chief Conductor, and conducting mentor Mariss Jansons, to cover for an indisposed Robin Ticciati. Then with barely a moment to breathe Mr. Bastian swiftly, and very successfully, conducted the orchestra in three subscription concerts that included a very ambitious programme of Brahms, Berg, and Elgar. Mr. Bastian dominated the program, successfully turning his sudden debut as a conductor into a sensational artistic triumph!

Joseph Bastian began his musical journey during his childhood in France, studying the cello, trombone, and composition. As his interest in music grew, he then attended the University of Music Saar where he focused on the trombone. Afterwards he then performed as a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez, and the Orchestra of the Academy of the Munich Philharmonic, before accepting his position as Principal Bass Trombonist at the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Highlights of the 2017/2018 season included successful debuts with the Bremer Philharmoniker, Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, Münchener Kammerorchester and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, as well as three debut subscription concerts with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker with a programme that included the world premiere of Fredrik Högberg’s Violin Concerto, to great critical acclaim.
 
 Obviously Mr. Bastian will be quite an asset to the Asian Youth Orchestra, offering  a great deal of experience and skill to our students this summer as they complete their advanced studies and travel the globe with their instruments.

Creating a more Gender-Balanced World #IWD2019



International Women’s Day (March 8th) has come and gone, but the members of Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022 know that supporting greater gender equality in Hong Kong is important every day. This year’s #IWD2019 campaign theme was #BalanceforBetter, focused on working together to raise awareness and take steps to create a more gender-balanced world. International Women’s Day is a global day focused on the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women-- which is very important, especially here in Hong Kong. Why? Looking around you may be inclined to believe there are quite a few women working in business, but when you dig deeper you’ll learn Hong Kong’s female workforce participation lags behind other developed economies such as Australia, China, Japan and Singapore.  

The Women's Foundation HK released this infographic examining Hong Kong women’s workplace progress in comparison with other economies in Asia Pacific.

  • Hong Kong’s female workforce participation is low at 55%, and lags behind Australia, China, Japan and Singapore.
  • Women earn an average of 22% less than their male counterparts
  • Hong Kong’s maternity leave at 10 weeks is well behind Australia, China, Japan and Singapore


Some items we can work on to improve the progression of gender equality, are:

  • Working on releasing ingrained gender biases, such as pressuring women to be the primary caregiver at home.
  • Improving work-life balance by offering flexible work options.
  • Reducing the gender pay gap by having more women in management and board positions, which in turn leads to more role models and increased change.
  • Increasing maternity leave by raising the current 10 weeks of leave to a minimum of 14 weeks.
Supporting women is way more than “just a women’s issue”, gender diversity benefits men and society as a whole. It’s about empowering People. Especially those affected by stereotypes, prejudices, and social barriers.
