In
2022 Hong Kong will be welcoming an estimated 40,000 people-- visitors
from all over the world coming to participate and show their support for Gay Games Hong Kong. There
are a wide variety of sporting events, 36 to be exact, including for
the first time ever in the history of the Gay Games: E-Sports, Dragon
Boat Racing, Rugby Sevens and Dodgeball. But the Gay Games go beyond
sports, within the rich history of the Gay Games you will find that it
was founded for the purpose of spreading the message of diversity and
acceptance. Key to meeting these goals is the cultural activities that
are of utmost importance to spreading the message of diversity. And as
the first Asian city to host the Gay Games, Hong Kong is in a unique
position to promote and share it’s cultural heritage with the world!
This is why the Diversity Arts Festival is major part of the Gay Games,
and why so much hard work and thousands of volunteer hours are going
into planning this vital celebration of the region's Arts and Culture.
The
Diversity Arts Festival will be supported by two massive art
exhibitions, Sunpride Foundation’s “Spectrosynthesis”, Asia’s largest
touring LGBT+ contemporary art exhibition; and a new-media exhibition
co-curated by Videotage, a Hong Kong-based non-profit promoter of video
art. All exhibits will share in the ethos of diversity and inclusion.
"Sunpride
Foundation is honoured to be part of Gay Games Hong Kong. We believe in
the power of art and its ability to inspire and communicate, especially
when the exhibition is hosted in public institutions and museums where
we can reach out to the general public. During Gay Games 2022, we plan
to collaborate with a public institution to organise an art exhibition
that will address gender and LGBTQ issues.”
-Patrick Sun Kai-yit, founder of Sunpride and of its impressive art collection
Since
its inception in San Francisco in 1982, the Gay Games has proudly had
an arts section dedicated to spreading the message of diversity. And
like the sporting contests, it is open to people of all sexual
orientations. The Diversity Arts Festival offers opportunities for
talented artists of all backgrounds to showcase Asia's cultural talents
to the world. This is why there will be an abundance of cultural
activities, including a planned 50+ performances (including daily
performances at the games village), interactive digital pieces,
memorials, satellite events in film, culture, spoken work, theatre, as
well as choirs performing during the Gay Games’ opening ceremony at Hong
Kong Stadium, and a memorial service that will feature sections of the
Gay Games Memorial Quilt, made since 1990 to commemorate people who died
of Aids.
So
much planning to do and so little time! We urge you to contact us if
you’d like to participate in the festival, help with volunteer work, or
