A Career in Music: Hard Work, Intense Friendships, and Butterflies

Book tickets now for The Asian Youth Orchestra’s Summer Festival, held in Hong Kong from 20 July to 8 August 2019, and Asian Performance Tour with performances in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing, Hong Kong, Taipei, Chiayi City, Seoul, Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Tokyo from 9 August to 1 September 2019.

We’re proud to have a hand in shaping the musical youth of Asia, and have seen many graduates go on to establish a successful career in the music industry. If you are considering a career in music, you must be prepared to work hard, very very hard. You may be surprised at how supportive people are in this profession, but you are always expected to give 110% at all times. Orchestra's are a family, and families must support each other to succeed-- we are all in the same boat together! There is constant support from all sides, especially in the Asian Youth Orchestra where we are investing in each and every student selected to play and tour the world with us.

The friendships you create with your fellow musicians will be intense. There are very few professions in which people get to know each other so deeply. They say music is a window into the soul. Therefore you can, and will, get to know very intimate details about your colleagues without ever uttering a word or knowing any details about their personal life.

Nervousness is normal! All musicians have faced the proverbial “butterflies in the stomach” before a performance. You likely faced them while auditioning for our Summer Tour… did you overcome them, or did they overcome you? Remember, we’re an orchestra… we’re a family… we’re all in this together! If you are having a hard time overcoming your nerves, talk to someone. Share your concerns. Sometimes that’s all you need to overcome it, and if you need more your teammates are here to help and support you. Success in this world is a group effort.

And on that note, remember every musician has messed up at some point. Everyone! From the most famous musicians to that person next to you right now. It’s not about the screw up, it’s how you handle it. Take note of what happened, learn from it, ask for help if needed, and move on to do better next time.

Success in the Music Industry can be very hard to achieve, it takes more than raw talent. It takes hard work, perseverance, confidence, and willingness to both take and give support to your fellow musicians.
