Increased Opportunities Offered by The Asian Youth Orchestra

The Asian Youth Orchestra has expanded its annual program to provide master classes and free concerts in July and August 2018, giving local musical students an advanced opportunity to study with AYO’s artist-faculty. All Master Classes will be held at the HKAPA.
The space available is very limited and rarely offered. There are many perks to be enjoyed in the class. The many studies that will take place include:
  1. Conducting gestures;
  2. Posture;
  3. Score reading;
  4. Score analysis;
  5. Performance practices;
  6. Sorting out tempi;
  7. Conducting opportunities to include conducting in front of individual players, ensembles and AYO, which are tailored to the artistes ability.
The repertoire includes:
  • Gershwin: An American in Paris
  • Enescu: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1.
Students will be given the good fortune to work under AYO’s founder, conductor and artistic director, Richard Pontzious and principal conductor, James Judd.
Richard Pontzious is a student of great composers and conductors like Lou Harrison, Ferdinand Leitner and so on. He came up with idea to unite the Asian region in order to create a great orchestra full of talented local musicians. He has accomplished much and received many awards, one of which includes the Hong Kong’s Bronze Bauhinia Star in the year 2000 and was also the very first overseas musician to be invited to live for an extended time in China, as well as having served as conductor-in-residence at the prestigious Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre.
James Judd is a brilliant British conductor who graduated from the world renowned Trinity College of Music. Born in Hertfordshire, England, in 1949, he came to international limelight when he served as the conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. Later, he was appointed as the Associate Music Director of the European Community Youth Orchestra and also served as the Music Director of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years.  He has been the recipient of critically acclaimed performances and accolades.
