The Importance of Music Theory



The Asian Youth Orchestra Summer Festival has begun! Is there anything else in this world as emotionally fluid as music? Music can tell stories, convey emotions from anger to sadness to happiness and all those in between, it can evoke memories from the past, and it can simply be used for entertainment-- from dancing and romance, to relaxing with a drink after a hard day. You’ll be hard pressed to find any entertainment today without music at its very core. From movies where music is used to build excitement, to simple family moments singing lullabies to a child or family bonding time, listening to songs on your smartphone as you make the daily commute to work on the MTR. Music is everywhere!

In essence, music is simply (or not so simply!) a collection of organized sounds-- that’s it! But in order to create these organized sounds, a good musician needs to start at the beginning-- learning Music Theory. Music Theory teaches you the different components of music and its building blocks, such as notations, notes, scales, rules of harmony and ear training. Once the basics of Music Theory have been mastered, and with lots of practice, the best place in Asia for young musicians aged 17 to 27 to turn to for advanced training is with the Asian Youth Orchestra.


Now of course it is possible to play and work as musicians without learning the basics of Music Theory, but it is strongly suggested to learn it. Learning Music Theory has multiple benefits and will move your career forward. Here are some of the benefits that music education can provide:

Music theory teaches you to name the function of the chords, giving you a way to train your ear to quickly figure out the exact names of chords being played.The ability to hear music using your ear and write it down is a must have skill, as writing makes music shareable and assisting you in playing it just as the composer intended.

By studying Music Theory you’ll become familiar with the basics of music that can help you to comprehend the importance of notation, keys, scales, intervals, pitch, melody, harmony, and more-- effectively enhancing your performance.

Welcome Linda Kovarik as #GGHK2022 Director Marketing


 
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Linda Kovarik as Director Marketing Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022. With over twenty-five years’ experience in Asia, Linda has a career which has included positions as Documentary Producer, UN Programme Officer, Creative Director and Strategic Planner. As founder of Creative Sherpa, she is currently dedicated to helping marketers and agencies across Asia develop deeper consumer insight and understanding, embracing such areas as creative crowdsourcing for new product development, and virtual and augmented reality within content.



She has worked as Chief Strategy Officer for Saatchi & Saatchi Greater China, leading all strategic planning disciplines: social, digital, brand, shopper, channel planning and analytics. Prior to this she served as Director of Creative Strategy and Development for Coca-Cola, responsible for creative output on all brands across Asia Pacific. Linda also spent 8 years with Leo Burnett, serving as Executive Planning Director in Tokyo and Asia-wide Planning Director for Procter & Gamble based in Hong Kong.

She has been recognized as one of Advertising Age’s Women to Watch in marketing, media and advertising, an award which honors women across the globe who demonstrate innovative leadership that promises to bring new thinking to marketing and advertising. In her spare time Linda has been involved with the mentorship program at the School of Leadership Afghanistan and spends many hours a week on Hong Kong’s beautiful coastline outrigging and dragon boating. In July 2018 she competed at the Club Crew World Championships of Dragon Boating in Szeged Hungary with her team the Stormy Dragons.

We are Asia’s premier pre-professional orchestra, highly focused on teaching and offering opportunities to the brightest and most talented young musicians living throughout Asia. Every year our founder & artistic director and general manager visit 11 Asian cities, including Manila, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and many more, listening to the auditions of musicians aged 17 to 27. Those selected are offered a full scholarship program study with an exceptional artist-faculty from around the world during a three-week Rehearsal Camp, followed by three-week international concert touring with celebrated artists and conductors. Roma EuroGames 2019



Thank you Roma #EuroGames2019 for organising and hosting a great event! We look forward to seeing you all at Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022!

The 17th edition of the EuroGames was hosted for the first time in the magical “eternal city”-- Rome! The opening ceremony can only be referred to as majestic, as the world watched in awe as over 4,000 athletes from 55 countries joined together in waving both national and rainbow flags in the parade at the square Colosseum at Eur. Alongside rainbow flags, France, Germany, Spain, and American flags were prevalent, and well received with plenty of applause from their Italian hosts.

The EuroGames were inspired by the Gay Games, hosted in San Fransisco USA in 1986, and promoted by the EGLSF (European Federation of Gay and Lesbian Sports). The EuroGames are meant to provide a safe and inclusive environment, support the European LGBT+ community, and assist with networking and “coming out”. This year’s sporting events included Football, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Swimming, Badminton, Dancing, Golf, Track and Field, Waterpolo, and Hockey, along with several ceremonies, cultural events, conferences, workshops, and more.


For the entire duration of the event, the EuroGames Sport Village was set up to provide an inclusive space to meet fellow athletes-- creating some life-long friendships-- and hosting entertainment, cultural events and music, as well as food and beverage services, and the stands of sponsors and supporting partners.
