The 7th Annual China Rainbow Awards

The 7th annual China Rainbow Awards were recently held in Shanghai on 27 January 2018. These awards are very important to the LGBT+ community in Asia, as they are designed to encourage objective and in-depth reporting on sexual and gender minorities by Chinese media outlets and journalists, and develop diversity, tolerance and a fair media environment for all. This year’s event was co-organized by ShanghaiPRIDE, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). We at Gay Games 11 Hong Kong applaud the organizing committee for the event, and for putting together such a powerful and moving program with speeches calling for deeper communication and collaboration between the media and the LGBT+ community.
The China Rainbow Media Awards are a series of awards given to media artisans and publication outlets for their coverage of or for featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the People’s Republic of China. The 2018 Awards were one of the biggest events yet with over 200 people from media organizations and the community attending the awards ceremony at Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai.  
Presenters included Wei Jiangang, Executive Manager of Beijing Gender Health Education Institute, who was representing the event organizer. Onny Jalink, Deputy Consul-General of the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Shanghai, who was representing the programme sponsor. Lesley, a ShanghaiPRIDE volunteer representative, and Cheng Qingsong, a film director, writer, and critic, representing the review panel. The speakers powerful messages were focused on communication, and emphasized on how raising the visibility of gender diversity heavily relies on the media and voices from the LGBT+ community working together. Teamwork is key.
The winners of the 7th China Rainbow Awards included:
“Behind Sham Marriages: Rejection and Acceptance by Mothers of Homosexuals” by Jinan Times for Best Story (Newspaper or Magazine).
“My Mother Is Gay” by Beijing News New Media for Best Story (Online Media)
“In the Name of Love” by CGTN New Media for Best Story (Video). (This is also the first China Rainbow Award for CCTV.)
“When You Are Old, Chinese, and Gay” by Sixth Tone for Best Story (English-Language Media).
