60th Anniversary of The International Tchaikovsky Competition


The Asian Youth Orchestra, Asia's premier pre-professional orchestra, is dedicated educating Asia’s brightest young musicians by offering exceptional opportunities for study and performance in an international environment. The 2015 Tchaikovsky Violin Competition Winner Benny Tseng Yu-Chien is currently touring with AYO in Hong Kong, mainland China, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan, playing the Barber violin concerto from 3 to 26 August 2018. Celebrating 60 years in 2018, The International Tchaikovsky Competition has been a major international event in the music community. The International Tchaikovsky Competition is held once every four years and includes competitions in Piano, Violin, Cello and a Vocal division. A fifth discipline was added in 1990, a contest for violin makers which is held before the main competitions.

The competition was named after a Russian composer named Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who lived between the years 1840 to 1893. He was regarded as the very first Russian composer whose music style got international acclaim as a result of appearing as a guest conductor in the United States and Europe. Some of his classical works include Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Marche Slav, Capriccio Italia and so on.

The main purpose of the International Tchaikovsky Competition is to reveal new talent, and in Russia the Competition is considered a landmark of national musical culture. But it has become much more than an asset of Russian musical culture, known internationally for producing many talented and extraordinary musicians.
One such artist is the famous pianist Van Cliburn, who won the first Competition in 1958. He was a 23 year old young man from Texas, United States, who played Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 3. This set an international precedence for the competition, as Russia ordered that the first prize be given to Van Cliburn even though the winner was supposed to be from the USSR. Van Cliburn went on to become the very first classical musician to receive a Grammy and his recording was the first of all classics to become platinum and then twice become platinum later.

Other renowned musicians from the International Tchaikovsky Competition include pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mikhail Pletnev, and Grigory Sokolov; violinists Viktor Tretiakov, Gidon Kremer, and Victoria Mullova; cellists David Geringas, Nathaniel Rosen, and Antonio Meneses and singers Evgeny Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova and Deborah Voigt.
