Bring your kids to Dymocks Sai Kung Hong Kong in their favorite Hogwarts School garb on Friday, 6th February 2015, 5:00 pm - 7.30 pm and let them relive the magic that is Harry Potter. The event will start with a sorting ceremony and children will be placed in their houses. Then the games begin. They can talk about why they just love J.K. Rowling’s books! They can interact with fellow Potterheads, they can share all about their favorite character (is it Hermione? Ron? Or maybe one of the Weasley twins?) and they can even come in their favorite Hogwarts School garb.

To participate children need to be at least 7 years old. Participants hould be registered either at the Dymocks Sai Kung shop or via email to: dymockssk@biznetvigator.com with the children’s name/s, age and full postal address. Limited space is available so a first come, first serve basis will be followed. Deadline for applications is on Sunday, 1st of February,

How HIV Advocates Can Make A Difference In An HIV Positive Patient’s Life

Decades ago, back when the Internet was a mere idea, when there were hardly any research and drugs that could somehow help prevent the HIV virus from becoming full-blown AIDS, back when HIV positive patients would just stare in shock at the news and wallow in self-pity, hearing about death among HIV patients became the norm. Fast forward to the 21st century - not only are there retroviral drugs that actually work, but there are more studies now about the disease. These result in more hope for HIV positive patients - more hope for them to continue living.

This is what 61 year old Mary Glenn, a patient who has tested positive for HIV since 1990, has been doing the past several years. Instead of wallowing in a corner, she decided that testing positive for HIV should not hinder her from living, from doing exactly what she wants to do. She decided that having HIV should not make her feel marginalized or discriminated. Instead, she devoted her time to helping other HIV patients, counseling them and helping them figure out which services they need. By doing this, Mary Glenn does not only make a difference in her own life, she also makes a difference in the lives of others.

Similarly, this is how HIV Advocates can also help make a difference in society. As a global initiative that aims to share news, experiences, strategies and new tools that will energize human rights movements and communities fighting HIV/AIDS, patients will receive study updates, new drug discoveries and even interact with fellow patients. More importantly, HIV Advocates can also continue to inspire patients to enjoy life, aim high, spend time with loved ones and just…live.

People all know that HIV is currently one of the world’s deadliest diseases and one of the biggest concerns that the world needs to address. HIV also easily attracts discrimination, abuse against the rights of others and yes, stigma. This is what HIV Advocates, a global initiative that aims to share news, experiences, strategies and new tools that will energize human rights movements and communities fighting HIV/AIDS, wants to address.

HIV Advocates is conducting a survey to further understand how to use its resources to end HIV-related stigma. The survey would only need quick feedback in terms of one’s experience in using the group’s official website as well as social media channels. The survey, which will be available until February 2015, will also provide platform for advocates to share their own advocacy work and stories. The results of the 10-minute survey will be used to understand what can be done further to raise value for HIV advocacy work.

Transgender Women Find Ally In Fight Against The Disease With HIV Advocates

There is a scary truth out there, especially involving the lesbian / gay / bisexual / transgender (LGBT) community. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), almost one in five transgender women worldwide are living with HIV and they have a higher chance of contracting the virus than other vulnerable groups, including sex workers, gay men and drug users.

This truth is truly alarming and only solidifies the fact that transgender women are indeed vulnerable to violence, stigma as well as abuse. This truth also reiterates the fact that HIV is one of the pressing societal concerns that need to be addressed.

One of the transgender women who serves as a real-life proof of this is 27 year old transgender woman Cecilia Chung. When she was arrested for soliciting and detained for a few days, she was coerced into having unprotected anal sex with one of the male inmates and as a result, she tested positive with the deadly disease.

To help Cecilia Chung and other transgender women like her, a global initiative to share news, experiences, strategies and new tools that will energize human rights movements and communities fighting HIV/AIDS has been established. HIV Advocates, an initiative supported by Levi Strauss Foundation and powered by B-Change Foundation, encourages members of the LGBT community to speak up by exploring the power of social media. Through the HIV Advocates’ online channels, the LGBT community and other stakeholders can start conversations, spark the interest of the public, come up with various plans of action and continue with information dissemination to fight HIV and the stigma that comes with it.
