2019 Asian Youth Orchestra Auditions are nearly here, with our first stop beginning in Manila, on 19 January. From there our panel of jurors will be traveling to Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai and finishing up in Beijing on 24 March. In this article we will be giving our auditioning musicians a bit of audition advice- we hope it will offer great help for your preparation.

Please also feel free to reference our audition advice articles from last year:

We hope these tips will help our aspiring youth to prepare their audition music assiduously.

You will be expected to perform an orchestral excerpt and a solo composition of your choice.  Orchestral excerpts can be found here.

Be sure to choose a solo piece that showcases your ability and versatility. A piece with varying tempi and mood shifts.

Plan ahead, listen to recordings of the orchestra you plan to audition for and take note of their style and preferences. You can find AYO’s Top Tracks here on YouTube

Tune your instrument carefully every day-- be sure it is in perfect tune for your big day!

Be confident in your playing. Play with a focused sound that will assure us that you can be heard over the orchestra, even in a pianissimo.

Try to memorize your excerpts, Yes, they will be in front of you -this can really come in handy if nerves get ahold of you- but things happen. Your best bet for a flawless performance is to have the music memorized.

Practice with a metronome. This will help you to know the correct speed you should be playing. Be sure you are not dragging or rushing.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

We wish you the best of luck at your upcoming audition!
