Hong Kong is known as “Asia’s World City” and the culture here was born in a sophisticated fusion of East and West. Hong Kong has not only kept many Chinese traditions, but also experienced a baptism of western culture. Here are a few highlights:
  • People – People are very diverse, belonging to various ethnicities and nationalities. Cantonese, British, Shanghainese, Indians and Jews form the main population of Hong Kong. Cantonese is the mainstream culture, thus Chinese traditions have a huge impact on Hong Kong’s cultural diversity.
  • Language – Though English is one of Hong Kong's official languages, most of the locals speak Cantonese, which is a dialect of Chinese. There are two main dialects of Chinese: Cantonese and Mandarin- difficult languages to learn.
  • Food – As a culinary capital of Asia, Hong Kong boasts various delicacies like egg tarts, pineapple buns and milk tea. The city is influenced by western countries and some of the foods combine the flavors of Chinese cuisine and western cuisine.

  • Martial Arts – Kung Fu and other martial arts are widely practiced all around Hong Kong as a source of entertainment and exercise. Moreover, Tai Chi or shadow boxing have been becoming more well-known.
Planned events at GGHK2022 include the Queer Tours of Hong Kong’s historic Central district, traditional Lion dance and Martial Arts demonstrations and workshops providing opportunities to learn about Hong Kong’s history and traditions, while the Film Festival and Literary Festival will showcase the city’s diversity of artistic form and practice.
