The New York Aquatics team hosted the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in New York City from Sunday June 23 to Sunday June 30th 2019. In conjunction with this event, New York City also hosted Stonewall’s 50th anniversary, and hosted WorldPride 2019. The last time the LGBT+ swimming community gathered in NYC was nearly 25 years ago, when they hosted Gay Games IV in 1994, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

The IGLA was pleased to invite and host LGBT+ and ally swimmers, water polo players, divers, synchronized swimmers, and open water swimmers. The event started with a warm-up swim and welcome reception on Sunday June 23rd, followed by several days of competitions and festivities, then concluding with a IGLA Sunset Boat Cruise on Saturday June 29th and Pride March on Sunday June 30th in honor of the 50th Stonewall Anniversary.

Competition events included swimming, water polo, diving, synchronized swimming, open water swimming, and the famous Pink Flamingo-- where teams put on creative, theatrical ensembles and perform skits generally aimed at telling a story that references a modern-day theme or historical or cultural experience.
