2019 Asian Youth Orchestra Rehearsal Camp -- Week 2

Dear AYO Friends,

What a week! Not sure if the lead story should be music (the Orchestra sounding incredibly fantastic), a signal 8 tropical depression closing the city (we were able to continue rehearsals for all but two hours of our 9-hour days), or city-wide public action.

We are safe and continue our daily rehearsal routines, the orchestra’s growth especially phenomenal. We are so proud of kids and appreciative of our artist-faculty and the techniques they share that raise the standard of playing to new heights!

Friday was great fun as our woodwind, brass and percussion sections staged a flash mob and pops performances in the lobby of Cathay Pacific’s Cathay City. Our thanks to the Cathay team that invited us and helped set it all up. The reaction from Cathay’s Simon Large: “It lifted our spirits.”

The International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in NYC

We had some amazing achievements from our Hong Kong Out Swimmers who participated in the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in New York City! (#IGLA2019)

HK Out Swimmers
David Warren won a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle
Sebastian Turner won a silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley
Shawn Hiltz won a silver medal in the 50 meter breaststroke, a silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke and a gold medal in the 100 meter breaststroke.

The New York Aquatics team hosted the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics Championships in New York City from Sunday June 23 to Sunday June 30th 2019. In conjunction with this event, New York City also hosted Stonewall’s 50th anniversary, and hosted WorldPride 2019. The last time the LGBT+ swimming community gathered in NYC was nearly 25 years ago, when they hosted Gay Games IV in 1994, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
