An Incredible Weekend of Sevens Rugby at Hong Kong Stadium!

So, I’m sure you’ve heard the Hong Kong Sevens 2019 results: Fiji beat France to win historic fifth title in a row. It was incredible, the entire Hong Kong Stadium erupted when Tuimaba ran almost the length of the pitch for Fiji’s first score. The atmosphere, the fabulous spectacle of costumed fans in the stands - and even outside of them! Hardcore rugby fan or casual observer… the event offically known as the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is absolutely awesome, even if you’re outside the South Stand.

A glorious weekend of Sevens Rugby at Hong Kong Stadium is tremendous fun for thousands of fans as they scream out their lungs for their fave teams. But the benefits far exceed the stadium boundaries-- the annual Hong Kong Sevens tournament benefits the whole city!

What you may not know:
Every year, the 40,000 tickets to watch inside the stadium are snapped up quicker than you can say Livai Ikanikoda.

Each day during the tournament, over 40,000 fans descend upon Hong Kong Stadium.

The economic impact of this is HUGE. Market research reports from the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens puts the economic impact HK$380 million for the city, largely due to overseas visitors, who make up more than half of the crowd.

Local restaurants, pubs and other businesses see a substantial boost in customers during the tournament, approximately a 20 percent increase in sales-- for some this event could make or break their business.

The market research reports from the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens also estimates that each overseas visitor spends about HK$19,000 on local businesses during their stay, which includes hotels, taxis, restaurants, entertainment, shopping and booze.
Pretty impressive huh?

Now put this knowledge towards the 2022 Gay Games, hosted for the very first time in Asia, by Hong Kong. Here’s a few things to mull over:

The 2018 Paris Gay Games set a record high attendance with 10,317 participants from 91 countries.

The 2022 Hong Kong Gay Games are expected to attract over 15,000 participants and add over one billion HK dollars (€108 million) to the local economy.

Our Hong Kong team is  planning big to ensure that the 2022 Gay Games will become a trailblazer for increased progress in diversity and inclusion in the world’s most populous region.

The Gay Games will make positive long-term impacts on Hong Kong’s overall well-being, as well as LGBT+ rights, long after the games have ended.

The benefits of hosting the Gay Games will reach far and wide-- beyond the Hong Kong borders, across Asia and have worldwide impact.
